Local Services - CUTS, CUTS, CUTS
Film of the local demonstration held on 28th February, opposing single status pay cuts and cuts in jobs and services.
Local unions called this demonstration to protest at huge cuts in pay (thousands per year) by low-paid workers, to pay for an ‘equal’ pay deal for even lower paid workers (known as ‘single status’), 300 job losses, pay restraint, and the cutting to the bone of local services, affecting already overworked staff and working class people in our community.
The demo brought together unions - Unison, Unite and the GMB - and community campaigners, including St. James St. Library Campaign, AntiScrap, and Residents Against Pollution (RAP) - all opposed to cuts in jobs and services.
These are national issues, but it is left to local areas to fight for a better deal. Birmingham Council workers showed tremendous solidarity and determination when 20,000 demonstrated on the same issues earlier in February, and intend to continue their action.
